Obituary

Dr. Charles Horace McAllister was born on February 5, 1933 to the late Ulyssess McAllister and Argie Lee Bowden in Lakeland, Florida. Charles spent his childhood in Lakeland, where he graduated from Washington Park High School in 1950.

He went on to continue his education at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia earning a Bachelor of Science Degree. While attending Virginia Union, Charles proudly pledged the Gamma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He continued his education and career goals by attending Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee where he received a medical degree in Dentistry. While at Meharry, Charles was the President of the Athletic Council '57; was on the All-Star Basketball Team '56-57; a member of the Kappa Sigma Pi Honorary Dental Society Program; and played on the Intramural Softball team. Charles used his athletic abilities in high school and throughout his collegiate years. He played basketball on the varsity team in high school, at Virginia Union, and in the Army. In his later years, he became an avid golfer. He loved playing golf so much, he would often say that he could eat a golf ball!

Charles began his journey in the Army during his senior year at Meharry. Upon graduation, he reported to Fort Gordon, Georgia to continue his career in the Dental Division as a Dentist. Upon returning home to Lakeland, Charles met the love of his life, Johnnye Estelle Tooson. After marriage, Charles opened his private practice in Sarasota, Florida where his patients were treated with compassion and care. Shortly after starting his practice, the family began to grow. Three wonderful children were born, Charles Jr., Kent, and Traci. The family lived in Sarasota, Florida and after a period of time, moved back to Lakeland, Florida.

Charles' dental career moved the family to Miami, Florida where he became the senior dentist in a facility for the State of Florida where he continued to treat special needs patients. He always served his community through hard work and dedication. While in practice, he attended community meetings where he advocated for the rights and fair acts of the people who lived in the nearby communities.

Charles was a strong, but fair man who selflessly gave his all to others in need. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. If he could help any one of his loved ones, he did so without hesitancy. His love for his family was undeniable and expressed through his actions.

His family were all members of New Bethel A.M.E. Church where he learned the importance of having faith and trusting God for all things.
